Ukrainian soldiers near Bakhmut warn of an approaching crisis moment. The lack of ammunition and support from the Western allies makes it completely impossible to launch a counter-offensive, and the army can thus only passively defend itself against the attacks of the Russian aggressor. In addition, Ukrainians recently had to withdraw from two other villages near Avdijivka, which the invading troops captured in February.
While the self-propelled guns of the Ukrainian army are firing at enemy positions, one of the soldiers brings the reporters from the Reuters agency closer to the crisis situation in which the fighters of the occupied country currently find themselves. “The Russians have increased activity in all directions, they were obviously inspired by their recent combat successes. Despite this, we are trying to hold the front line. But without weapons and air force, we are left with only the option of passive defense, and sooner or later there will be nothing,” admits soldier Mykhailo.
The Ukrainian army and the president of the occupied country, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, have repeatedly said that the troops lack the equipment and ammunition needed to repel Russian attacks. “With only human power we will not be able to hold back the enemy, we need iron. The more iron, the more missiles we will fire. Then the defense will be more effective. And we will go on the counter-offensive,” adds Mykhailo.
The situation on the eastern front is still complicated, Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskij said last Thursday. The Ukrainians managed to push the Russian troops out of the village of Orlivka west of Avdijivka, which the Russians captured in February.
Orlivka is located approximately four kilometers northwest of the village of Lastočkyne, which was recently occupied by the aggressor.
According to Ukrainian authorities, Moscow is also pushing several other areas along the front line. The Ukrainian military said this week it had withdrawn from two more villages near Avdijivka.
