We spend four times more on bars than on car maintenance

The recovery of the economy, of employment and of the average spending of Spanish families after the pandemic has not improved the amount of resources that, in relative terms, we invest in road safety with the fine-tuning of our vehicles. The truth is that Spaniards spend four times more in bars and restaurants than in responsible car maintenance after the pandemic.

This is the main conclusion of the sixth edition of the “Take care of the engine of your life” report prepared by EuroTaller, with the focus on the pandemic period, from March 2020 to December 2021.

Despite increasing their workshop spending in 2021, Spaniards are allocating practically the same amount as in 2014 or 2015, when then total spending on all types of products and services was more than 2,000 euros lower.

Likewise, the weight of the item in the budget of Spanish households allocated to caring for their vehicles stood at 1.96% of total spending in 2021, when in 2011 it was 2.14%.

Expenditure in bars and restaurants increased by 30.5%, double that spent on getting the car ready, 15.08% more. In the last ten years, the average expenditure of families on the maintenance of their vehicles has decreased by 8.34%, going from 624.39 euros in 2011 to 572.29 euros in 2021.

“It is not good news that responsible and proper vehicle maintenance is still not a priority for many drivers. Investing in getting the car ready is doing it in road safety”, explained the director of EuroTaller, Álvaro León.

By region, the families of Galicia (815.08 euros), Cantabria (709.64 euros) and the Balearic Islands (668.13 euros) were the ones that invested the most in 2021 in caring for their vehicles. At the opposite pole are the households of Aragón (325.08 euros), Navarra (471.22 euros) and Castilla-La Mancha (495.04 euros), which were the ones that spent the least on car maintenance.
