Bay of Bengal Storm Symbol to Bring Heavy Rain to Tamil Nadu

The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a warning about heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu due to a storm symbol forming in the Bay of Bengal. The department stated that there is a possibility of rain in Tamil Nadu until November 19, with very heavy rain expected in nine districts on Wednesday, November 15.

The low-pressure area that began on Tuesday is expected to strengthen into a depression on Wednesday and move over the Odisha coast on Thursday, according to the Meteorological Department. The Southern Regional Head of the Meteorological Center, S. Balachandran, stated that the situation will intensify on November 16 and move northeastwards towards the Odisha coast.

Heavy rain has been recorded in various places throughout Tamil Nadu, with some areas receiving up to 170 mm of rainfall. The Chennai Meteorological Department has also forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall in the coastal districts and suburbs of Chennai.

The recent rainfall in Tamil Nadu has been significantly below normal, with only 40 mm of rainfall recorded during the Northeast Monsoon season, which is 14 percent less than the expected 270 mm.

In addition to rainfall, the Meteorological Department has warned of strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 45 km per hour in coastal areas, advising fishermen against going to sea for fishing from Wednesday to the 16th.

The rainfall recorded during the last 24 hours ending on Tuesday morning included 170 mm in Velankanni, 150 mm in Nagai, and 140 mm in Karaikal, as well as significant rainfall in many other areas.

Residents of Tamil Nadu are advised to take precautions and stay updated on weather forecasts as the storm symbol continues to develop.
