Rone : L (oo) ping

On Art Concert from June 23

How to translate on screen the energy of a concert, the singular vibration between an orchestra and its public? In recent years, television has been innovating with ever more immersive recordings, which show in detail the gestures of the musicians, the concentrated gaze of the conductor… This film goes even further by injecting a part of fiction. From performances of the show L (oo) pinggiven by Erwan Castex, alias Rone, with the Orchester national de Lyon in December 2022, director Louise Narboni has imagined a poetic reverie combining dance, electronic and symphonic music.

Nine professional dancers slip into the shoes of a whimsical usher, a couple of spectators on the verge of breaking up, the stage manager… While Rone and the 80 musicians of the orchestra take flight in aerial melodies , the characters move, twirl in the passageways, in the hangers, in the basement or in the parking lot. They are literally one with the brutalist architecture of the Lyon auditorium.

Planing compositions

The very graphic framing, with ingenious color schemes, skilfully takes advantage of this concrete colossus resembling a spaceship stranded in the Part-Dieu business district. From time to time, the film offers glimpses outside, on the roof of the building in superb aerial views, or at the Tête d’Or zoological park. on the piece Babeloboes and bassoons, then flutes and female choirs delicately accompany the ballet of pelicans and flamingos.

Remember that Rone has close ties with the 7th art. A former film student, he signed the soundtrack ofOlympiads by Jacques Audiard and won a César in 2021 for that of The Night Comes by Frederic Farrucci. It is hardly surprising that his compositions, alternately hovering or euphoric, go so well with the images in this unclassifiable film.
