Family expresses Gratitude After Father’s Recovery from severe West Nile Virus Encephalitis
A family is sharing their heartfelt thanks to the medical team at busto Arsizio hospital in Italy after their father successfully battled a severe case of West Nile virus and encephalitis, following a mosquito bite. Discharged two days prior, the patient’s recovery marks a positive outcome after months of intensive care.
The ordeal began with a mosquito bite, leading to high fever, discomfort, and ultimately, a diagnosis of the hazardous West Nile fever. The patient’s condition quickly deteriorated, requiring a two-month hospitalization.
“My father went through an extremely critical period, remaining in serious conditions for over a month due to severe encephalitis caused by the virus,” shared the patient’s daughter in a letter to the hospital. “In the last two weeks, fortunately, he has recovered mental clarity and, although physically debilitated, he has returned to his present and alert state.”
The family specifically praised the dedication of the medical staff in the departments of Medicine 1 and Infectious Diseases. “Thanks to the exceptional work of the entire medical team, my father was able to return home safe and sound,” the daughter wrote. “He will certainly need a period of physical recovery, but he is alive and with us.”
West Nile virus is typically spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While many people infected with the virus experience no symptoms, some develop a fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue. In rare cases, as in this instance, the virus can cause more serious neurological illnesses such as encephalitis – inflammation of the brain.
The family’s letter serves as a powerful testament to the skill and compassion of healthcare workers. “we kindly ask you to publish this letter as a heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, nurses, health and social workers and volunteers who took care of my father with extraordinary professionalism and humanity,” the daughter concluded. “In these two months we have been able to personally see the dedication and availability with wich they carry out their precious work on a daily basis. We can only express our deepest gratitude for what we did for my father.”
