What a drawn citizens’ council can achieve

by time news

Berlin centerWhat an idea! Let Berliners decide what their city should look like. Let them have a say in how things will be built for the coming decades. Real participation and, above all, real right to make decisions. Crazy, right?

Citizens’ councils, drawn city-wide and independent of any influence, could be a solution – this idea came to Giorgio Paschotta, who lives in Mitte and works as a teacher in Neukölln, while walking: he walked with guests from Alexa along Grunerstraße to Nikolaiviertel. “We couldn’t talk to each other, it was an infernal noise,” he describes the moment when he decided not to stand idly by such brutal conditions any longer.
