Buying a home, contract of inheritance or notarization – a notary is necessary for many legal transactions in Germany. The profession, for which only fully qualified lawyers after a preparatory service or lawyers with at least five years of professional experience (lawyer notaries) can qualify, is equally important for companies and private individuals. Therefore, the notary is traditionally one of the top earners in a comparison of all freelance professions.
Like many other professional groups, notaries are confronted with demographic change. By no means every notary’s office can be continued with the age-related retirement of a notary. According to the latest information from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of notaries in Germany has fallen by around a quarter within 17 years. This strengthens the advocates of extending the jurisdiction of notaries to make the profession more attractive.
