It would be a shame for a former reality TV star like Donald Trump. In a letter signed Thursday, 26 U.S. Democratic Party lawmakers called for the former president’s trial for his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results to be televised.

Politicians, supporters of President Joe Biden, judge that “few circumstances justify a television broadcast more than these, given their historical nature”. Another stated purpose of the request: to demonstrate pedagogy to the general public and prevent criticism of a supposed inequality in the justice process. “For the public to fully accept the outcome of this trial, it is vital that they can see it, as immediately as possible, to see how the proceedings are conducted, the quality of the evidence, the credibility of the witnesses”.

Rebroadcast of Federal Trials Prohibited by Law

Even Trump lawyer John Lauro said he was in favor of the measure. “I am convinced that the Biden administration does not want the American people to access the truth,” he added on the very conservative Fox News channel. A trial date for the former president in the case is set for August 28.

Only problem: if the rebroadcast is authorized in the courts of certain States, it is prohibited since 1946 with regard to the federal justice, of which falls the business of the election of 2020. This ban could be lifted either by a new law passed in Congress or by a decision of the Supreme Court.

There is no guarantee, however, that a replay of Donald Trump’s trial, surrounded by court cases, will change the minds of his most fervent supporters. According to a recent New York Times poll, 74% of Republican voters think Joe Biden’s predecessor did nothing wrong.
