A recent review of the security measures for AIADMK MP CV Shanmughat has indicated that there is no suggested threat to him, leading to the police department withdrawing his security. This finding was presented to the Madras High Court in response to a petition submitted by CV Shanmugam, who was given security after his brother-in-law’s fatal attack during the 2006 assembly election. In the petition, he demanded an explanation for the sudden withdrawal of his security and the denial of his gun license’s renewal. The High Court ordered the police department to report the reason for the withdrawal of CV Shanmugam’s security. At the hearing, the police department explained that they concluded there was no risk to CV Shanmughat, and the judge requested a status report on the matter by March 27.

Chennai: A re-examination of security for AIADMK MP CV Shanmughat revealed that there was no threat to him. Based on that, the police department told the Madras High Court that his security was withdrawn.

In a petition filed last year by AIADMK minister and current MP CV Shanmugam in the Chennai High Court, “During the last assembly election in 2006, my brother-in-law was killed in a murderous attack by a mysterious gang who entered my house. After that he was given police protection. Granted but the protection was suddenly revoked last November 2021. My gun license was also not renewed.

Now that the case related to the 2006 incident has reached the stage of witness examination, the security granted to me has been withdrawn. The reason for this has not been given. The reason for withdrawal of security should be given to him. In the petition, he demanded that the petition filed in November 2021 and January last year be considered for providing security to me. The High Court heard the case and ordered the police department to respond.

The case came up for hearing today before Justice Jayachandran. Senior lawyer KS Dinakaran, who appeared on behalf of CV Shanmugam, said, “Threats and death threats are coming through social media and cell phone calls. The police department is closing the complaint without taking any action in this regard and claiming that there is no motive.”

Lawyer Babu Muthu Meeran, appearing on behalf of the police department, said, “When the security for CV Shanmughat was re-examined, it was found that there was no threat to him. Based on that, his security was withdrawn.”
