According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), hallmarking refers to the precise determination of the proportional content of precious metals and their proper recording. In many countries, hallmarks serve as official marks guaranteeing the purity or fineness of precious metals.

In India at present hallmarking is done only for two metals, gold and silver. Introduced to avoid adulteration, fake jewellery. It helps manufacturers to maintain legal standards of gold and silver jewelery in the country.

Hallmark Mandatory for Gold:

The Government of India (GoI) made hallmarking mandatory for gold jewelery in mid-June last year. From June 1, 2022, manufacturers are legally bound to sell hallmarked gold jewelery only after verifying its purity. This also applies to white gold alloys.

Although there is a certain amount of clarity regarding gold, people still have questions about silver jewelry and coins. It may be noted that the mandatory hallmarking rules applicable to gold articles are not applicable to silver jewelery and coins.

The six grades of Indian silver namely 990, 970, 925, 900, 835 and 800 have purity levels of 99, 97, 92.5, 90, 83.5 and 80 per cent respectively.

According to BIS, consumers can get their jewelery or precious metal specimens tested at BIS approved grading and hallmarking centres.
