DECRYPTION – Private sales, sales, outlets… Brands are doing everything to sell off their stocks, even at ultra-cut prices.

Clothes that no one bought at full price, nor discounted. The winter sales ended on Wednesday, and like every year, traders still have plenty of goods on their hands. These unsold items are often considered an ecological scandal. We find tons of them, from all over the world, still labeled, in deserts and on beaches. In 2018, the United Nations sounded the alarm about the environmental damage caused by these open-air dumps and urged fashion players to change industrial practices. Although brands still try to avoid the subject, the management of their unsold items tends to become more virtuous.

According to Ademe, the Ecological Transition Agency, 5% of unsold clothing and shoes in France were incinerated or landfilled in 2019. By prohibiting their destruction since January 1, 2022, the Agec law obliged a certain number of brands to rethink the flow of their stocks
