Nikola Tesla invented the electric motor while engrossed in walking, Harry Potter was born in JK Rowling’s mind while stuck on a train – and Archimedes formulated his law of buoyancy while taking a bath. History is full of anecdotes about breakthrough ideas that unexpectedly wound up from the depths of the unconscious, and new evidence from studies has found an extensive network throughout the brain containing electrical activity that triggers the emergence of creative thoughts. But what does all this have to do with music, from jazz to rap and hip hop?

The “JAZZLAB” series, three unique original productions under the artistic direction of the singer-songwriter Chen Levy, a teacher at ‘Rimon’ and director of the Jazz Festival for Female Creation, are the result of a collaboration between the jazz department at ‘Rimon – a music school’ with Culture in Sela’, a new program in the Michael Sela Auditorium at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot. As part of the performances, teachers and graduates of the school for their generations, such as Ahinoam Nini, Gili Dor, Segol 59 and others, give scientific ideas a musical interpretation woven in the creative laboratory on stage.

The series connects the rich platform of the Weizmann Institute for Science with the creativity of Ramon and deepens the affinity between the worlds. Seemingly opposites, but diving into scientific articles written by the institute’s researchers revealed launching points that inspired the performances. In this way, intriguing and unusual combinations were born that invite you to a creative experience in real time, based on ideas from the exact scientific worlds that received a musical interpretation from a surprising and exciting connection with improvisation and the jazz world that strives for expression, freedom and absolute liberation.

The shows will be held on Tuesday 11/15/22 and on Friday 12/30/22 and 1/20/23, in the Michael Sela Auditorium at the Weizmann Institute of Science, 234 Herzl Street, Rehovot. Order tickets and route information Ramon site or by phone 08-9467890.
