Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 will return to a major update cycle once a year, matching other platforms available in the industry in 2021. After that, the company now plans to roll out a “new engineering schedule for Windows” that will allow Microsoft “Going back to a more traditional three-year release cycle for major releases of the Windows client.”

The tech giant plans to ship “major” versions of Windows every three years, which means that Windows 12, which will be the next version, is scheduled for release in 2024 (three years after Windows 11 shipped in 2021), according to a report from Windows Central. .

Meanwhile, the report suggests that the company will also ramp up production of new features released for the current version of Windows available in the market. Moreover, Microsoft’s new decision will mean the end of the Windows client release, codenamed Sun Valley 3, which was planned in 2023.

Microsoft’s new “Moments” feature

According to the report, Microsoft is starting a new “Moments” feature with the release of Windows 11 22H2 (Sun Valley 2), as this feature is designed to allow the company to offer new features and experiences “at key points throughout the year,” excluding major OS releases, and the report also mentions Microsoft is expected to release new features every few months for the version of Windows already available in the market, up to four times per year, starting in 2023.

For example, earlier this year, Microsoft included weather information in the taskbar without releasing a major update, meaning the company doesn’t have to roll out major Windows updates to enable new features, and Microsoft released the Windows subsystem for Android as an app that users can install on Windows 11 and was made available a few months after the operating system was first released.

Moreover, this new release system can make each new version of Windows more exciting as the company will have more time to build new features in each version and find any bugs and squash them before they are released for general availability, the report notes.

How this new step will be a big step for Microsoft

The report also claims that this will be a “major turnaround” from the path Microsoft has taken over the past few years. Earlier, Microsoft used to release two new major versions of Windows 10 every year, which were initially released in 2015, however, with Windows 11, the company confirmed the release of a new major version every year. Meanwhile, it is important to note that Microsoft has not yet officially announced any such change which indicates that internal plans may change.
