ANTONIO TONINO CRIPEZZI WAS FOUND DEAD IN THE HOTEL ROOM…

The best-known face of the historic band de The Chameleons, it was undoubtedly Antonio Tonino Cripezzi. In fact, for years he was the keyboard player but above all the leader of the Italian group which is still in business today after more than 60 years. Tonino Crepezzi died in 2022, at just 76 years old: he was found lifeless in the room of the Hotel Dragonara, in San Giovanni Chietini, in the province of Chieti, where he was in the company of the other members of the band. He had an illness which unfortunately led to his death. The Camaleonti had performed the evening before in concert at the Villa de Riseis Park in Pescara and after the show they had entertained with the fans, then the return to the hotel and the morning after the tragic discovery, with Tonino Crepezzi who was not there it was more.

Despite the alarm, the intervention of the healthcare personnel was of no avail given that, when the artist was taken care of by the doctors, he was already lifeless. It was his friend who broke the news of his passing Mario Lavezzi, among the founders of the band, who through a post published on X (at the time it was still called Twitter), wrote: «My dear lifelong friend Tonino Cripezzi passed away in his sleep. I can’t believe it, I’m shocked by the pain. The beautiful moments we spent together come back to mind, which I will always keep in my deep dear friend.”

WHO IS ANTONIO TONINO CRIPEZZI: ORIGINS AND CAREER

Antonio Cripezzi, known by all as Tonino, was born in Milan on 26 February 1946 but his family was originally from the province of Potenza, precisely from Palazzo San Gervasio. He joined I Camelonti first as a vocalist, replacing the outgoing Riki Maiocchi (who in the meantime started a solo career), and then as keyboard player from 1967.

Over the course of his career he has also played the violin but also the synths together with my colleague and friend Massimo Brunetti. Cripezzi is recognized music of different songs of the group such as Amico di Diritti, Amico Perso, Pensa, Dove curva il cielo, Gimcana and others, while in 1993 he took part in the recording of Elio and Le Storie Tese’s album “Esco dalla mia corpo e ho very scared”, singing the song “(Elbow to Elbow with) Abortion”.
