Who is John Bolton, the coup specialist | The dark history of the American diplomat

by time news

The confession of the former US National Security Adviser John Bolton on the sponsorship of the Trump administration in various hit of State showed only part of the hostile work he had in his long career as an official of several republican governments, from the final stretch of the Cold War onwards.

In order to have under his cloak the political and operational power to overthrow democratic governments through false institutional means, Bolton made use of an extensive career during which he stood out as one of the most effective anti-communist harassers and framers of undemocratic plots.

Hand in hand with Reagan

Although his membership in the Republican Party dates back to the 1960s, his first role inside the White House was held during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. He held a position in the Coordination of Programs and Policies of the Agency for International Development, a think tank in charge of designing the North American strategy on the so-called Third World countries, several of them in the process of leaving the military dictatorships promoted during the years ’60s and ’70s by Washington through Henry Kissinger.

During those years when those nations were spoils of the Cold War, Bolton became an emissary from the Republican White House on the Judiciary. In 1985 he was appointed United States Deputy Attorney General and held that position for three years, until 1988.

He was not only a self-confessed anti-communist but also an avowed warmonger who knew how to bring his influence to the Capitolas a political operator. The biographies that refer to him describe him as a direct, untimely and hostile character. “Flatterer of his superiors and abusive with his subordinates”as defined by former Republican Senator Carl Ford

Later served in the Justice and State Departments for three administrations. Between 1989 and 1993 he was Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs and then head of the Arms Control and International Security Affairs area.

Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya

From there and through his contacts at the United Nations (UN), he became one of the architects of the US invasion of Iraq. That achievement would allow him, two years later, to sit in the chair of the United States ambassador before the concert of nations.

Not only did he sit down at the small table to design the military offensive in Iraq but, from diplomacy, he wove Washington’s strategy step by step to achieve international consensus that later allowed him to overthrow Saddam Husseinwith the false accusation that the former Iraqi leader had weapons of mass destruction in his possession.

However the counterpoint he had with the White House was to oppose the cessation of pressure on Libya, at that time in the hands of Muammar Khadafito eliminate the country’s weapons of mass destruction program.

in august 2005 returned to the White House at the hands of George Bush Jr., which ratified him as ambassador to the UN. From there, he advocated the permanence of the United States in Iraq, the continuous military interventions in Middle Eastern countries and the invasion in Afghanistanafter the terrorist attacks of 11M.

“We have to bomb Iran”

Once removed from power by the advent of Democratic administrations, Bolton continued to influence the hostile profile of the Republican Party. He advocated preemptive strikes against North Korea and Iran, two nuclear-capable countries. “The idea is not to have much bigger hostilities, but to prevent the Iranians from participating in the hostilities that they are already doing against us inside Iraq,” he had said.

In 2015, he published an opinion piece in The New York Times in which he argued that “To stop the Iranian bomb, you have to bomb Iran”. After that, he predicted, “the United States could do a painstaking job of destruction” hand in hand with Israel.

Trump adviser

He maintained the same position when in 2018 Donald Trump called him to be Secretary of Security of the United States. From there he led the attempts to overthrow Nicolás Maduro, in Venezuela, and continued to promote what he confessed in the last few hours: “Help plan coups in other countries”.
