Yesterday, Thursday, April 4, Government of Ecuador declared persona non grata to the ambassador of Mexico in that country, Raquel Serur Smeke. But who he is and what he has achieved in his professional career, here we tell you.
As we mentioned at the beginning, Serur Smeke was considered persona non grata after the comments of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, regarding his recent electoral process.

“In the context of the recent and very unfortunate statements of the President of MexicoAndrés Manuel López Obradorabout the 2023 elections in Ecuador and the assassination of the presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio (…) the Government has decided (…) to declare the Ambassador of Mexico in Quito ‘persona non grata’, madam Raquel Serur Smeke,” says part of a statement from the Ecuadorian Government.
For this reason, President AMLO said this Friday that an armed forces plane will fly to the South American country to repatriate the ambassador.

But who is Raquel Serur?
Raquel Serur Smeke studied a degree in Modern Literature (English) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She also completed the Master of Arts in English and American Studies at the University of East Anglia, in England.
The ambassador also has a doctorate in Letters from UNAM.
Serur Smeke has been a visiting professor at the Braudel Center of the New York State University Campus Binghamton, at the University of California Irvine and at the Latin American Institute of the Freie Uníversitát Berlin.
Professional positions
In Mexico, she was a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM in the period from 1976 to 2000. Subsequently, from 2000 to 2019, she was a full professor “A” at the same faculty.
By June 2019 and to date, Raquel Serur took charge of the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador.

Positions in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM
Among other positions, Serur Smeke was also a referee in the Interinstitutional Committees for the Evaluation of Higher Education (CIEES) for the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM.
At the same faculty, he was responsible for scholarships and PSPA; in addition to being coordinator of the Department of English Letters, SUAFYL. Likewise, Raquel Serur became Academic Secretary and Division Head of SUAFYL, as well as a university advisor for the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters; In 2009, she participated in the shortlist to direct said department.
Recognition and co-president of MEGECI
In 2020, the “Dolores Cacuango” outstanding women who have demonstrated merits in their area of performance in favor of Ecuador, society, and the educational institution received recognition.
On the other hand, she was co-president of the Gender Roundtable for International Cooperation (MEGECI), of the United Nations Organization-Women in Ecuador, in the period of 2022-2023.
