Soy milk has become a popular plant-based drink among those seeking alternatives to cow’s milk, particularly those following a vegan diet or with lactose intolerance. It is made from soaked, ground, and refined soybeans, resulting in a liquid rich in nutrients.

While soy milk offers various advantages, including the contribution of vitamins B, C, D, and K, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc, it’s not suitable for everyone. Contraindications and groups who should avoid its consumption are listed below.
Soy milk is valued for its low saturated fat content and lack of trans fat, making it a healthy choice for maintaining a balanced diet. With approximately 100 calories per cup, it also provides seven grams of protein and essential amino acids. Studies have shown its potential to reduce LDL cholesterol and improve bone health thanks to its vitamin D and magnesium content.
Despite these benefits, soy milk is not suitable for everyone. One concern is the presence of isoflavones, which have a structure similar to estrogen. While beneficial for postmenopausal women, their potential side effects are controversial. Some research suggests a possible association between soy consumption and increased breast cancer risk in women with a family or personal history of the disease.

Additionally, due to limited understanding of its effects on fetuses, pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid soy milk.
Thyroid Problems and Soy Milk Consumption
Individuals with thyroid problems should be cautious with soy milk consumption. Certain components of soy can interfere with thyroid function, potentially leading to gland enlargement.
Digestive Effects and Moderate Consumption
Excessive consumption of soy milk can lead to digestive issues, including diarrhea and bloating. It can also interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients. To avoid these side effects, experts recommend limiting daily intake to a maximum of 500 ml.
