A mini-job in retirement? Why not, thought Monika Gruner-Herr. For her, money was only a secondary concern.

At the end of the year it’s finally over. On January 1, 2024, your well-deserved retirement finally begins. Monika Gruner-Herr actually wanted to officially retire three years ago, on January 1, 2021. Her 45 years of work were complete and “thanks to Ms. Nahles” she could have retired at 63+. But things turned out differently.

She was actually looking forward to retirement at the beginning of 2021, says Gruner-Herr in her dining room in front of a green tiled stove in Kelkheim-Münster, about 18 kilometers west of Frankfurt am Main. Because her last official year of work was also the first year of the pandemic. That was thankless and exhausting and “it didn’t have to happen now,” says the 66-year-old.
