The cold case case of Claudia Otto, who was murdered 36 years ago, probably remains unsolved. On Tuesday afternoon, the Bonn regional court acquitted Detlef M.. The only evidence for the prosecution was a DNA trace found decades later by experts from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office on an adhesive sheet. As in the Otto case, the foils were previously used exclusively to find possible fiber traces on the victims.

The DNA trace that was then found as part of the re-opening of cold case cases in the Otto case proved to be worthless during the main hearing because it could not be ruled out that the evidence was handled improperly and the trace was subsequently discovered .

23-year-old Claudia Otto from Lohmar near Bonn was strangled in May 1987 in the “Naafs-Häuschen” country hotel run by her parents. Hotel regular Detlef M. came under suspicion shortly after the crime. The year after Claudia Otto’s death, M. made national headlines with a gruesome double murder in Sauerland. For this crime, which he confessed to, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
