It’s a question many ask: why don’t I exercise more, eat better and live healthier overall? Answer: Because we feel too tired. A new study shows that fatigue is one of the biggest reasons people don’t make changes to their diet and exercise more.

Lack of motivation

A YouGov survey of 2,086 UK adults for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) exposes the obstacles people face in pursuing a healthy lifestyle. When asked what prevents them from eating healthier and exercising more often, 29% of men and 40% of women answer that they often just feel too tired.

Even more people gave the reason ‘lack of motivation’ (38%). Other frequently cited reasons include food costs (30%), lack of time (26%) and work-life balance (25%). Others mentioned the costs of exercising (25%), such as purchasing a fitness subscription or equipment, lack of self-confidence (16%) and ‘not knowing where to start’ (12%).

Only one in four (24%) of Britons surveyed said there was nothing stopping them from taking steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

Reduce risk of cancer

One in two people will develop cancer at some point. Eating right and exercising are important ways to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and Cancer Research UK estimate that 40% of all cancers could be prevented if more people lived healthier lives, for example by eating healthier, being active, maintaining a normal weight, avoiding sunburn and not to smoke.
