President Gustavo Petro was invited to the Munich Security Conference, thus becoming the only South American leader present at this annual meeting that brings together prominent world leaders and security experts.

The meeting, which will take place from February 16 to 18 in the German citywill have the participation of about 300 delegates from almost one hundred countries. Among the attendees are figures such as the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, the vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

President Petro expressed his commitment to the topics that will be discussed at the conference, focusing on human security in the current context and the importance of an international alliance for life and democracy to confront challenges such as the climate crisis.

During the meeting, various topics will be addressed, including the economy, climate change, technology and international conflicts such as the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will host the event, and UN Secretary General, António Guterres, will open one of the panels. In addition, the Munich Security Report, a report on the security situation in the world, will be presented.

The Munich Security Conference, which has been held for 60 years, aims to debate current issues in foreign policy, security and defense, promoting dialogue as a means to achieve global peace and stability.

At last year’s Conference, the Vice President of the Republic, Francia Márquez, spoke, proposing a demilitarized vision of security and proposing a new world order based on the defense of life.
