Only the extension of line 14 should be inaugurated in time for the Olympics. This automatic line will connect the Olympic Village to Saint-Denis-Pleyel, as far as Orly airport, in the very south, by June 2024… That is one month before the start of the Games, during which 800,000 additional people are expected on average every day in transport, on the 25 dedicated sites in Île-de-France. The Court of Auditors, which estimates the overall influx at 13 million tourists (excluding Ile-de-France residents), is asking to provide, by the end of the year, traffic plans in “disturbed situation”.

Initially promised for 2024, lines 16 and 17 have been delayed. The section on line 16 (Saint-Denis-Pleyel – Clichy-Montfermeil) will open in 2026. Line 17, which will go to Le Bourget airport, next to the media village, will not be ready until 2025 And line 15, which was to extend in 2030 to Champigny, will be a few months or even a year late.

Reassessment of costs

Tunnel boring machines for future metro lines have advanced in recent years, despite the health crisis, the reassessment of project costs – from 35.6 billion euros to 36.1 billion (in 2012 euros) – and criticism from environmentalists who denounce the artificialization of agricultural land, in Saclay and Gonesse.

The cost of the project is also human: five workers have died on the construction sites since 2020. This year, the Société du Grand Paris (SGP), conductor of this huge construction site, recognized for the first time a requirement of safety insufficiently respected by its service providers.
