Texas residents Willie and Taiya Herndon face criminal charges following the fatal October 14 freeway shooting of 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri. Federal investigators are now examining ballistic evidence linking Willie Herndon to a second roadway attack in St. Louis days earlier.
The fatal encounter unfolded on the evening of October 14 as 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson drove south on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri, heading toward the St. Louis Zoo for its annual Halloween celebration. Security footage captured a person exiting a parked white Buick Enclave, standing outside briefly, and firing a single round into the rear of Wilson’s passing red Buick Encore.
The bullet penetrated the vehicle and struck the teenager in the back, exiting through her chest. The gunfire left her incapacitated, and her car slammed into a concrete median barrier. Emergency responders rushed her to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Texas Couple Tracked to Illinois Hotel Room
Authorities utilized surveillance footage and automated license plate readers to trace the suspect vehicle to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, roughly 12 miles from St. Louis. Detectives maintained a stakeout for hours before taking the couple into custody. A judge-approved search of their hotel room yielded an AR-15-style rifle and ammunition matching the brand and size of a casing recovered after Wilson’s killing, along with notebooks containing handwritten entries detailing license plate numbers, vehicle descriptions, and law enforcement personnel the suspect believed were following him.
St. Louis County prosecutor Melissa Price Smith announced that Willie Herndon of Arlington, Texas, has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. His wife, Taiya Herndon, faces a state charge of hindering prosecution for driving her husband away from the scene to the Illinois hotel. Willie Herndon also faces a federal charge of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, stemming from previous felony convictions in Los Angeles.
Investigators Test Casings From Second Highway Shooting
Federal court documents reveal that investigators are probing whether Willie Herndon is connected to a separate roadway shooting that occurred three days prior on October 11 in St. Louis proper. In that incident, a vehicle exiting Interstate 55 was struck by gunfire, though no injuries were reported. Security footage showed a white SUV parked on the interstate shoulder that fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Investigators recovered a single spent cartridge case near the Interstate 55 site bearing a headstamp from the same manufacturer as the casing found at the Overland highway crime scene. Laboratory testing is underway to determine whether ballistic evidence directly ties the two crimes together.
When interviewed, Willie Herndon admitted to standing outside the passenger door of the vehicle on southbound Interstate 170, and discharging a rifle.

Father Mourns Daughter Days Before Milestone Birthday
During a news conference at the courthouse in Clayton, the victim’s father, Robert Hickman, shared the heartbreaking reality of his daughter’s final weeks and the plans that were cut short.
Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future. She had 60 days until she turned 18, and we were getting ready to take our first family vacation together to go to Disney for her to see her favorite person in the world, Princess Tiana, and unfortunately, she’s not going to get to do that any more. This was a senseless act.

Authorities confirmed that Alyssa Wilson had no prior relationship or connection with either of the accused individuals. The investigation involved the collaborative efforts of the regional Major Case Squad, according to FBI St. Louis Assistant Special Agent in Charge Dave Herr.
Willie Herndon is being held ahead of a federal detention hearing, with a preliminary federal hearing scheduled for November 4. Taiya Herndon’s bail was set at $500,000 to be paid in full, with a state preliminary hearing scheduled for November 19, leaving whether laboratory testing will definitively link the two interstate shootings still undetermined.
