The gods are playing with the weather this Wednesday, September 13, and the summer heat continues in Paris. Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince, from the incendiary rock duo The Kills, are installed in the interior courtyard of a posh hotel in the 10th arrondissement. The two musicians, very close, arrive at the end of a long day of promotion, without showing too many signs of weariness. A waitress brings a margarita and matcha tea ordered by the American singer. “I have a different cocktail for each interview”, she jokes, wearing a baseball cap with blonde locks peeking out, dressed in a sky blue Celine hoodie. A glass of red wine is served to his partner, the British guitarist Jamie Hince, ten years his senior (54 years old), fake Tony Montana (and more smiling), very elegant in an apple green sweater.

The latest news from the Kills is the release of a sixth album, God Games (“divine games”), who seems to have heard the prayers of the group’s fans. It has indeed been seven years since one of the most exposed and explosive garage rock duos of the 2000s, alongside the White Stripes, last released an album worthy of the name. With the exception, however, of Little Bastards (2020), a compilation unearthing rarities and unreleased tracks from their first decade of career. Just enough to keep the public waiting before this real return to business.

The pair only gave a handful of concerts in four years. The traditional “album-tour” cycle was abruptly interrupted in March 2020 by the Covid-19 pandemic. “I now try to see things in a positive wayexplains Alison Mosshart. We were already writing songs before the pandemic. We could have released an album two years ago, but it would have been very different. Having time was really valuable to be more introspective and to be able to continue writing. Ultimately, it was the first time we felt like we weren’t hamsters running madly on the wheel of life. »

Shake up habits

The one who was the singer of Dead Weather – one of the groups led by Jack White, ex-White Stripes – says she read a lot during this uncertain period, from Tender is the night (Scribner, 1934), by Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940). More recently, the memoirs of New York actress Alexandra Auder, Don’t Call Me Home (Viking, 2023, untranslated), were a favorite. On the music side, she appreciates the new Queens of the Stone Age and Lana Del Rey. Jamie Hince more silk on the Californian diva, whose song he admires A & W (2023), while admitting to not having listened to anything really new since the rapper Tyler, the Creator.
