Man Crashes Stolen 24-Tonne Earthmover into Royal Mail Lorry in Wolverhampton
A 41-year-old man has been arrested after leading police on a multi-hour chase through Wolverhampton, culminating in a dramatic crash involving a stolen earthmover and a Royal Mail lorry. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday evening, caused significant disruption and damage throughout the city centre.
Authorities were initially alerted to reports of a stolen 24-tonne bulldozer taken from an address in Stafford. The suspect then drove the heavy construction vehicle along Bridgnorth Road, Compton Road West, and onto the A4150 dual carriageway, causing widespread chaos.
By late Saturday afternoon, the bulldozer had already begun to wreak havoc, damaging street furniture and tearing up road surfaces. A witness, Charlene Harris, 47, recounted the scene to reporters. “When we came out, it looked like the police were stopping the Royal Mail van, but then we realised a copper was driving it,” she said. “It was being used to block the road. The police were shouting at everyone to keep away – and then we got word that a bulldozer was coming down from Willenhall.”
Harris continued, “The bulldozer got through the lorry easily. We couldn’t believe what was going on. The amount of police trying to stop it was unbelievable.”
The pursuit finally came to an end at approximately 8:15 PM on New Road, Willenhall. The suspect was taken into custody and is currently being held while inquiries continue. He faces a multitude of charges, including drink driving, dangerous driving, threat to damage or destroy property, theft, failing to stop for police, taking a conveyance without consent, and using threatening, abusive, or insulting words and behaviour to cause harassment.
The incident highlights the potential dangers of vehicle theft and the challenges faced by law enforcement in responding to such situations. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the suspect’s motives or the full extent of the damage caused.
