An 82-year-old woman was pronounced dead at a New York nursing home, only to be found breathing three hours later at the funeral home where she had been taken, authorities said.
According to authorities, it was the second time in about a month that something like this had happened in the United States. The woman in the latest case was at Water’s Edge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Port Jefferson on Long Island at 11:15 a.m. Saturday when she was pronounced dead, local county police said.
The woman pronounced dead, whose name was not released, was reportedly taken to OB Davis Funeral Homes in Miller Place, New York, at 1:30 p.m. Police said they discovered her breathing at 2:09 p.m. The woman was taken to a hospital, since then there have been no updates on her health condition.
The funeral home issued a statement saying only: “Out of respect for the privacy and confidentiality of the families we have the honor to serve, we are not in a position to comment further on this matter.”
The first similar case
The apparent premature declaration of death came days after an Iowa nursing home was fined $10,000 over a similar case.
Iowa authorities reported that a 66-year-old woman was pronounced dead on January 3 at Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbandale, Iowa, where she was receiving hospice care.
The woman was placed in a body bag and taken to Ankeny Funeral Home & Crematory. Funeral home employees opened the bag and found the woman alive and gasping, the New York Times reported, attributing the information to a subpoena from the Iowa department of inspections and appeals.
Center staff called 911 and the woman was returned to hospice, where she died on January 5, the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals said in a report. Police reported that the New York case has been referred to the state attorney general’s office for investigation.
