Macalester Women’s Swimming & Diving Falls to St.Olaf in Competitive Meet

The Macalester College women’s swimming & diving team delivered a spirited performance but ultimately fell to St. Olaf College with a final score of 163-136 on Saturday at Riley Pool.Despite the defeat, several Scots swimmers achieved individual victories and strong finishes, showcasing the team’s depth and potential.

Scots Showcase Strength in Freestyle Events

Jay Young, a first-year standout, dominated the freestyle events, securing victories in both the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:08.10 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.54. Maya Téllez, a sophomore, also claimed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 2:01.07, closely followed by teammate hannah Zurn who touched the wall at 2:02.84.

Breaststroke and butterfly Brilliance

Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton proved her prowess in the breaststroke, winning the 200-yard event with a time of 2:30.59. She also secured a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:02.19. Molly Nuckolls, another sophomore, claimed victory in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:15.64.

Individual Medley and Backstroke Performances

First-year swimmer Poppy wedding impressed in the 400-yard individual medley, winning with a time of 4:52.77, while Nuckolls finished a close second at 4:59.37. Emma Henry earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in at 1:00.76, with senior Nadia Lanz taking third in 1:02.10. Lanz also secured a third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.52.

Pro tip – Swimmers often focus on streamlining off walls to maximize speed. A tight body position and extended arms can shave valuable tenths of a second off each turn.

Relay Success and Diving Contributions

The Scots demonstrated their strength in relay events, securing a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:52.89,thanks to the efforts of Henry,Uhlhorn-Thornton,Zurn,and Amalia Shields. They closed the meet with a decisive victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Henry, Shields, Zurn, and Téllez finishing in 1:42.48.
