“Wonder Woman 1984 was a disgrace for us”: Gal Gadot under attack

The Egyptian creator of the Marvel series “Moon Knight” referred to the representation of Egypt in the film “Wonder Woman 1984”, in which the Israeli actress Gal Gadot stars, as a “disgrace”. Muhammad Diab, a screenwriter from Egypt, cited the sequel to “DC Comics” from 2020 as an example, discussing issues with the way his country is represented in American cinema.

In “Wonder Woman 1984,” Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) and Steve Trevor (Chris Payne) are seen visiting Egypt, with one of the film’s main action scenes allegedly taking place in Cairo.

In an interview with SFX magazine, Diab referred to Egypt’s representation in Hollywood: “It’s always exotic – we call it oriental. It makes us dehumanize. We’re always naked, we’re always sexy, we’re always bad, we’re always exaggerated.”

Speaking of “Wonder Woman 1984”, he said that “you never see Cairo. You always see photos of Jordan as Cairo, Morocco as Cairo, sometimes Spain as Cairo. It really angers us.”

“I remember seeing ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ and there was a great sequence of action in Egypt and it was a disgrace for us. There was a sheikh there – it did not make sense to us. Egypt looked like a medieval country. It looked like the desert,” Diab concluded.
