A worker met a tragic end Friday afternoon at the Port of Montreal.
The fatal work accident occurred shortly after 1:30 pm at the Terminal Viau, located at the corner of Rue Notre-Dame East and Rue Viau.
According to our information, the victim’s head was crushed by a heavy weight. No attempts at resuscitation were made. It was an obvious death.
However, the circumstances of this tragic accident remain unknown. The victim is believed to be a truck driver, whose age has not been specified.
Reached by telephone, the communications director of the Port of Montreal did not want to provide further details about the incident.
However, he noted that psychological support would be offered on site to those who felt they needed it “as is always the case during this type of incident”.
The investigation will be carried out by the Commission for Standards, Equality, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) with the aim of clarifying the circumstances of the tragedy.
Terminal Viau, where the accident occurred, is Montreal’s newest container terminal, with an area of 38.4 hectares, according to the port’s website. It has been in operation since 2016.
