Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has enacted a law to protect workers from aggression and exploitation. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization has announced a new order to regulate labor relations. The law was passed by UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The law provides protection for employees in various occupations and leads to a more flexible approach to employment.

Law No. 33 of 2021 on the regulation of employment relations in federal law will come into force from February 2 next year. This is the most important recent amendment to the Labor Law. The new law is being implemented in view of the rapidly changing employment landscape between technological advances and the Kovid situation, said Human Resources and Emiratisation Minister Dr. Abdurrahman Al Tawar said. The law is considered to be helpful for full-time, part-time and temporary jobs.

Probation should not exceed six months

The law stipulates that probation should not exceed six months. It also prevents the illegal seizure of workers’ documents. The worker is allowed to move from one business establishment to another. The new law will not force the employer to leave the country after the expiration of the term of employment. All these provisions are considered to be beneficial changes for the expatriates as well.

Protection for women

The law promotes elements to protect and empower women in the workplace. It also prohibits sexual harassment, intimidation, or verbal, physical, or psychological violence against workers by their superiors or co-workers. The new law strictly prohibits any form of discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, religion or nationality.

The participation of UAE citizens will increase

The law will help increase the participation and competitiveness of UAE citizens. Labor cases are exempt from judicial fees at all stages of litigation. The law guarantees and protects the rights of both parties to the employment contract in a balanced manner.
