On the second day of the G-20 summit, held in New Delhi on September 10, world leaders gathered at the Rajghat area to pay their respects at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. India, as the presidency of the G-20 organization for this year, hosted various conferences across the country, culminating in the G-20 summit attended by leaders such as US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the visiting leaders amidst the rainfall at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in the Rajghat area. The first dignitaries to arrive were UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sher Hasina, and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Sing Loong. Prime Minister Modi, dressed in traditional Indian attire, welcomed each leader wearing an Angavastra, a traditional Indian shawl, against the backdrop of Gandhi’s hut. The leaders then paid their tributes at the Gandhi Memorial.

In a show of respect, leaders followed the tradition of removing their footwear inside the memorial. US President Joe Biden opted for flat-footed armor instead of shoes, while British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Macron left their shoes and socks behind. A devotional song played as the leaders observed a moment of silence to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy.

Following the memorial visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold a lunch meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron this afternoon to discuss bilateral issues and strengthen diplomatic ties.

In other news, US President Joe Biden concluded his visit to Vietnam after engaging in important consultations with Vietnamese leaders. The discussions primarily focused on the ongoing border dispute between China and Vietnam, making his visit significant in the context of regional geopolitics.

The G-20 summit in New Delhi serves as an important platform for global leaders to address pressing economic and political issues, fostering cooperation and coordination among member states. As India assumes the G-20 presidency for this year, extensive discussions and deliberations are expected to shape the future of international relations and global governance.
