John Marshall Art Teacher Named West Virginia Education Association Art Teacher of the Year
A Marshall County educator is being celebrated for her dedication to the arts. John Marshall High School art teacher Elaina DePetro was recently honored with the West Virginia Education Association Art Teacher of the Year award, a recognition of her impactful work both in the classroom and beyond.
The Marshall County Board of Education formally recognized DePetro during their meeting on Tuesday, presenting her with a certificate of achievement. The award acknowledges her contributions to art education at John Marshall High School and her additional role as an adjunct instructor at West Virginia University.
DePetro, a resident of Wheeling originally from Pittsburgh, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, particularly given her relatively short tenure. “It means a lot because this is only my third school year teaching,” she said. “To be recognized already for the work I do at John Marshall but the state level and my work as an adjunct at WVU, it’s really meaningful that people noticed and put me up for the award.”
Educational Background and Expertise
DePetro’s commitment to artistic excellence is reflected in her academic credentials. She holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a master’s degree in art education from West Virginia University. This combination of practical design skills and pedagogical training allows her to provide students with a well-rounded art education.
Counselor Recognition
In addition to honoring DePetro, the board also acknowledged the efforts of John Marshall High School’s school counselors. The counseling team received the Champions for College Access and Success award for their dedication to guiding students toward successful post-graduation pathways. Counselor Gavin Hartle accepted a certificate on behalf of the team during the meeting.
