Peking Xi Jinping remains head of the Chinese Communist Party (CP) and continues to expand his power. As expected, the Central Committee of the CP voted on Sunday after the conclusion of the party congress for a third five-year term for the 69-year-old as general secretary.

The new composition of the CCP leadership also indicates that Xi intends to remain in power beyond the third term. Two observations speak in favor of this: Due to their age, none of the six men from the new leadership is suitable to succeed Xi. At the same time, the new leadership consists exclusively of Xi followers. Neil Thomas, China analyst at the US think tank Eurasia, speaks of a consolidation of power “not seen since the Mao era”.
