A long hug that is worth handover. A few minutes after his election, Tuesday, June 28, to the presidency of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, 51, deputy La République en Marche (LRM) of Yvelines, was welcomed in front of the Petit Hôtel, adjoining the Palais- Bourbon, by his predecessor, Richard Ferrand. Defeated in his stronghold of Finistère, this framework of Macronie once again coveted the perch. He had to resolve to leave his place as the fourth character of the State to Mr.me Braun-Pivet, who thus becomes the first woman to hold this position.

The former president (LRM) of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, and the deputy (LRM) of Yvelines Yaël Braun-Pivet, who succeeds him at the perch, at the Palais-Bourbon, June 28, 2022.

For his first statement, standing, overlooking the 577 seats of an almost full Assembly, the ephemeral Minister for Overseas France joined the “long and winding (…) path of equality between men and women”.

While the presidential formations – LRM, the MoDem and Horizons – no longer have an absolute majority, Mme Braun-Pivet took advantage of the abstention of the 89 deputies of the National Rally (RN) to win the ballot in the second round. After the withdrawal of the RN candidate, Sébastien Chenu (North), at the end of the first round, Mme Braun-Pivet was ahead, with 242 votes, of Fatiha Keloua-Hachi (New Popular, Ecological and Social Union, Nupes, 144), Annie Genevard (Les Républicains, 60) and Nathalie Bassire (unregistered, 16).

“Debate rather than fight”

Before this election, which marked the official opening of the 16e legislature, the session was inaugurated at 3 p.m. by the dean of the National Assembly, José Gonzalez, 79, RN deputy for Bouches-du-Rhône. For the second time under the Ve Republic – after Edouard Frédéric-Dupont in 1986 – it is an elected representative of the far right who spoke from the perch. His words confused the audience.

Mr. Gonzalez, pied-noir, born in Oran, spoke of his native land, to which he was ” snatch “. “I left part of my France and a lot of friends there. I am a man who has seen his soul forever bruised” to the independence of Algeria in 1962, he declared, defining himself as a “true patriot”. A speech denounced in the process by the deputies of the left, including the “rebellious” Alexis Corbière, seeing there “negationist remarks”.

The deputies Raquel Garrido (LFI, Seine-Saint-Denis, in the last row, in the center) and Guillaume Garrot (PS, Mayenne, on his left), during the election of the President of the National Assembly, in Paris, on June 28, 2022.

Mr. Rodriguez however resumed his place at the perch at the end of the afternoon to announce the results of the second round of the ballot and proclaim the victory of Mr.me Braun-Pivet, applauded by the deputies. After discussing the new political deal, the former president of the law commission – who had already applied for the perch in 2018 against Richard Ferrand – called on the elected officials to “to get out of these sterile quarrels that we have too often been reproached for”.
