Bulgarian Coalition Calls for Government Resignation Amid Economic Policy Criticism
A vote of no confidence has been submitted against the current Bulgarian cabinet, fueled by accusations of economic mismanagement and deliberate harm to citizens. The move, spearheaded by a coalition including the DSB and PP-DB parties, comes after a controversial budget proposal was withdrawn, sparking widespread public protest.
Budget Controversy and Allegations of Deception
According to a leading member of the opposition, the withdrawn budget would have inflicted “very serious economic damage in the medium term.” He expressed relief that the proposal was halted, attributing the outcome to both parliamentary opposition and public demonstrations.
The core of the criticism centers on claims that the government intentionally pursued policies detrimental to the Bulgarian people. “They just lied,” the official stated. “This was not the only budget possible. They wanted to raise taxes, raise benefits. They declared war on the middle class and got what they deserved.”
Uniting Opposition and Impending Protests
The cabinet’s actions, the official argued, have unexpectedly unified opposition forces across the political spectrum. “They succeeded in a phenomenal way in uniting against itself all the economically free people in Bulgaria,” he asserted.
The coalition plans to present a detailed case for the vote of no confidence during an upcoming parliamentary debate, coinciding with a planned national protest. This coordinated effort signals a significant escalation in the challenge to the current government.
Historical Parallels and Calls for Change
In a striking comparison, the official drew parallels between the current leadership and the final days of Bulgaria’s communist regime. Specifically, he likened the current Prime Minister to Todor Zhivkov, the former communist leader, stating, “From today’s point of view – Borisov looks like Todor Zhivkov at the last meeting of the Politburo – where he refuses to understand what situation he is in, denies reality and does not know what is happening.”
He further dismissed the notion that the current ruling party, GERB, could continue to navigate the political landscape through shifting allegiances. “This role can no longer be played by GERB. There is no way that Borisov can be in the role of Scheherazade… 1001 nights are over.”
The official concluded with a forceful call for immediate action. “It’s time to take a stand. It’s time for this cabinet to resign. GERB must understand that the longer they are in this situation, the more they erode and the end of this cabinet is inevitable.”
