Kast Defends “Clean Streets” Pledge Amidst Controversy Surrounding Elected Official’s Post

A pledge to “clean the streets” by presidential candidate José Antonio Kast is facing scrutiny following a controversial social media post by newly elected Republican representative Sebastián Zamora, sparking accusations of authoritarian undertones. The situation unfolded as Zamora remained silent in the face of mounting criticism.
The uproar began with a now-deleted post by Zamora, often referred to as “Cabo” Zamora, where he explicitly called for cleaning the streets should Kast win the presidency. The publication quickly drew condemnation, particularly after its removal from Zamora’s social media accounts just hours after being posted.
Criticism From the Left
The strongest reactions came from left-leaning political figures. According to reports, a parliamentarian from the Frente Amplista, Jorge Brito, likened Zamora’s statement to rhetoric employed by European authoritarian regimes during World War II. This comparison fueled concerns about the potential direction of policy under a Kast administration.
Kast himself addressed the controversy, stating he had not personally seen the post but affirmed his commitment to “clean” the streets, emphasizing that any such actions would be conducted “always within the legal framework.” This clarification, however, did little to quell the rising tide of criticism.

Concerns Over Inexperience and Rule of Law
Further criticism emerged from Tomás de Rementería, a senator from the Socialist Party representing Valparaíso. Rementería suggested Zamora’s statement demonstrated inexperience in public office and warned that such a proposal could undermine the rule of law within the country.

As of today, November 27, 2025, Zamora, elected to represent District 7, has not responded to inquiries from La Radio regarding his Instagram post. The silence from the elected official only intensifies the debate surrounding the meaning and implications of his initial statement and Kast’s subsequent defense. The incident underscores the challenges facing the incoming administration as it navigates a deeply polarized political landscape.
