Zigbee 4.0 Ushers in New Era of Smart Home Connectivity with ‘Suzi‘ Feature
A major upgrade to teh Zigbee wireless standard is poised to considerably reduce reliance on dedicated smart home hubs, offering improved range, security, and battery life for connected devices.
The latest iteration, Zigbee 4.0, introduces a groundbreaking feature called “Suzi” – an acronym for Sub GHz and Zigbee – that expands the technology’s reach into sub-GHz frequencies. This move promises more reliable coverage, notably in challenging environments.
Suzi-enabled devices will be identifiable by a specific label and will operate on the European 800 MHz and North American 900 MHz bands,diverging from the traditional 2.4 GHz frequency.According to the Connectivity standards Alliance, these lower frequencies are better equipped to penetrate thick walls and cover longer distances. This enhancement is expected to benefit a wide range of devices, including sensors, lights, and security systems deployed in gardens, garages, and outbuildings, minimizing the need for costly signal repeaters. “this makes Zigbee a stronger option not just in homes, but also in commercial spaces where buildings are bigger and layouts are more complex,” a senior official stated.
Suzi joins existing branded Zigbee features like Smart Energy hardware for energy usage monitoring and Green Power devices capable of harvesting energy from ambient light or heat. Its arrival is particularly noteworthy as many manufacturers are currently focusing on Matter over Thread, which still utilizes 2.4 GHz.This sub-GHz capability provides Zigbee with a distinct competitive advantage, promising fewer connectivity dead zones and reduced hardware requirements while retaining the benefits of its robust mesh network.
Beyond Suzi: Enhanced Usability and Security
Zigbee 4.0 delivers improvements beyond the suzi feature, focusing on enhancing the overall user experience. The standard now streamlines data sharing between devices, strengthens security protocols, and extends battery life by enabling devices to communicate on pre-defined schedules rather than continuously. The certification process for new devices has also been simplified, accelerating the time to market for manufacturers.
One particularly useful addition is Batch Commissioning, which allows installers to quickly onboard large numbers of devices simultaneously, eliminating the tedious process of individual pairing.
Furthermore, Zigbee direct, previously an optional feature, is now standard.This allows smartphones to directly discover, control, and integrate Zigbee devices using Bluetooth Low Energy, bypassing the need for a dedicated hub. “Zigbee 4.0 remains fully compatible with Zigbee 3.0 and smart energy hardware, so existing setups will not be left behind,” according to a company release.
While some existing products may receive over-the-air updates to incorporate the new features, the specific devices eligible for these upgrades remain to be determined. The Suzi certification programme is anticipated to launch in the first half of 2026.
