Threads will be available to users in the European Union (EU) starting this Thursday, December 14. From that moment on, users will be able to begin sharing text and image publications on the social network, according to Meta, the company behind the ‘app’, on a website enabled for these countries, in which shows a countdown.

The social network was launched by Zuckerberg’s digital emporium last summer. It is a platform designed to share ideas, opinions and creativity through short text publications, in a similar way to the social network X (formerly Twitter). In the end, it is an attempt by Meta to fish in troubled waters and take advantage of the current difficulties of the ‘app’ owned by Elon Musk, which continues to lose the attention of advertisers and users.

Although Threads officially arrived last July in more than 100 countries globally, it has not been able to arrive in EU countries due to “the complexities” of complying with privacy laws, the company indicated after its launch. .

Specifically, as the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, already explained, the main reason why it did not reach these countries is found in “the laws that will come into force next year”, that is, the regulations corresponding to the Digital Markets Law and the Digital Services Law.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has also influenced its delay, since, although Threads is a completely independent platform, it is related to Instagram, since it imports user data from said ‘app’ to its operation. These include those related to behavior and advertising, something that is not allowed by the aforementioned regulations.

Although publications cannot be shared so far in the EU, it is possible to see what another user shares in the ‘microblogging’ application. That will change starting next Thursday, December 14 at 12 pm (mainland Spain), when Threads will officially arrive in these countries.

This has been suggested by the company on the application’s website, where it has introduced a countdown that concludes this day, as well as on Instagram itself, where it has introduced a format to access the QR code for downloading the application.

It has also been announced by social media analyst and consultant Matt Navarra in a post on Threads, who has verified that, when typing the word ‘ticket’ in the Instagram search engine, an icon of an entry or ‘ticket’ appears. Clicking on it shows users a digital invitation to Threads along with a countdown to its launch, detailing what will be next. Thursday December 14 when it comes into effect, as well as the code to install the platform.

It is worth remembering that ‘The Wall Street Journal’ announced a few days ago that the company intended to launch Threads in the countries of the European Union this December, without specifying the date on which it would finally reach these users. This newspaper pointed out that, in order to operate in Europe, the company would offer the possibility of using Threads without having to have a profile, that is, allowing only the publication of content. This is possible thanks to the recent disconnection of Threads from the Instagram service. At the moment, the platform has not clarified how it will do so or the data to which it will have access.

With this expansion of its service to Europe, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg aims to demonstrate the stability of its service, by including around 40 million additional users on the platform by 2024.
