AF Hasan Arif, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Lands, said that waterlogging is a long-standing problem in Dhaka city. Some initiatives have been gradually taken to alleviate waterlogging during the monsoon season, but it is not enough. For a permanent solution to waterlogging, measures should be taken as per the advice of experts. The ministry has convened a meeting to take expert advice. Waterlogging will be resolved step by step. The mess of 15 years will not be cleared in one day.

He said these things in the chief guest’s speech at the preparation and action plan review meeting on the elimination of flooding in Dhaka city during the monsoon season in the conference room of the local government department at the secretariat on Tuesday (October 8).

The local government adviser said, we have invited those who are experts and those who have research on waterlogging, not limited to our small experience or the experience of the ministry. We will listen to them, accept their views and try to implement them. If waterlogging is not removed, we will realize that people are being deprived of civic benefits.

He also said that due to waterlogging, the movement of people is decreasing, the movement is stopping. Children are not able to go to school, schools are closing. Getting sick. Hence, it is very important to eliminate waterlogging. Why will there be water in the city, where the drainage system has been spent at the expense of so many crores of rupees! Where is the lump, I will take the advice from the experts.

Hasan Arif said, it is not possible to solve the waterlogging only with one-way initiative of the ministry. Citizens should also be aware. Plastic bottles, one-time cups, polythene bags and tin shells are not thrown away by the Ministry, but by the people. If the people are not aware, the ministry will not be able to clean the garbage accumulated in the sewers even with 1 crore cleaners. Print and electronic media also have to play a bold role in creating awareness among the citizens.

In the meeting, Secretary of Local Government Department (Routine Duties). Nazrul Islam, Administrator of Narayanganj City Corporation AHM Kamruzzaman, Chief Engineer of Directorate of Local Government Engineering. Ali Akhtar Hossain, Professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering. Mustafa Ali, Chief Engineer of Public Health Engineering Department Tushar Mohan Sadhu Khan along with senior officials of local government department and various experts were present.
