Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainty. Test cricket is the oldest form of cricket. Which is also considered as the standard of cricket. However, Test cricket is slowly losing its appeal due to the popularity of shorter format cricket in the modern era. But Test cricket in several top tier countries is still watched with great interest. England made an example of that in the Multan Test.
England scored 823 for 7 in reply to Pakistan‘s 556 after losing all their wickets in the first innings. Then Pakistan were bowled out for just 220 runs in the second innings and lost by an innings and 47 runs. Which is the third precedent in Doba in the shame of losing despite scoring 556 runs in this century. Earlier this century, Australia and Bangladesh had set such a precedent.
Australia, 2003:
Australia faced India in the second Test in Adelaide. Batting first, the hosts scored 556 runs in 127 overs after losing all wickets in the first innings. Ricky Ponting scored the highest 242 runs. In reply, India scored 523 runs in 161.5 overs with Rahul Dravid’s 233 and VVS Laxman’s 148.
With a lead of 33 runs, Australia went into bat in the second innings and were bowled out for 196 runs in 56.2 overs by the bowling of Ajit Agarkar (6/41). The target for India is 230 runs. And India lost that run in 72.4 overs by losing 6 wickets. Australia lost by scoring 556 runs in the first innings.
Bangladesh, 2012:
Bangladesh faced West Indies in Dhaka Test. In the first innings, West Indies scored 527 runs for 4 wickets in 144 overs on the back of Shivnarayan Chanderpaul’s unbeaten 203, Dinesh Ramdin’s 126 and Kieron Powell’s 117.
Naeem Islam’s 108, Nasir Hossain’s 96, Shakib Al Hasan’s 89, Tamim Iqbal’s 72 and Mahmudullah Riyad’s 62 innings to answer, Bangladesh scored 556 runs in 148.3 overs losing all wickets. The lead is 29 runs.
Then West Indies were all out for 273 runs in 74.2 overs in the second innings. Powell also scored a century (110) in this innings. The target of victory in front of Bangladesh is only 245 runs.
But Bangladesh got all out for just 167 runs in 54.3 overs on the bowling of Tino Best. In that, despite scoring 556 runs in the first innings, the loss is by 77 runs. This was the second precedent in this century.
This time, Pakistan also added their name to that precedent by scoring 556 runs against England in the first innings and losing by an innings.
