The British non-governmental organization “The Trussell Trust” revealed that “9.3 million people in the United Kingdom, including 3 million children, suffer from poverty and hunger.”
According to the organization’s report, “nearly a quarter of children under the age of 4 live in extreme poverty.”
The organization said in a statement: “It is shocking that 46% of children face hunger and poverty more than they did two decades ago. This means that one in every 5 children grows up in this situation.”
The Trussell Trust added: “Without urgent action from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, the number of people facing hunger and poverty, known as living below the 25% poverty line, will rise further.”
The organization noted, “The poverty line is set at £152 ($199) per week for a person living alone and £204 for a single father or mother with one child, and these amounts include the costs of electricity, water, and property taxes, in addition to food.”
The Trussell Trust noted that “removing the maximum benefit benefit for children born after April 2017 could help alleviate poverty levels.”
Helen Barnard, director of policy, research and impact at the Trussell Trust, said: “The latest figures should not be so in one of the world’s richest countries.”
She added: “We need urgent action on hunger in the UK, because if nothing changes, the number of people facing hunger and hardship will only increase.”
It is noteworthy that “the cost of living crisis was a major issue in the elections, as strikes were organized from various sectors, such as doctors, nurses, teachers, and train drivers, due to wages that did not keep pace with inflation. A previous study by UNICEF, last year 2023, indicated that “the Kingdom The United States, a member of the G7 and NATO, and the sixth largest economy in the world, has one of the highest rates of child poverty among rich countries.
