The local representative of Morena in the Mexico City CongressYuriri Ayala Zúñiga, presented a initiative to repeal from the local Penal Code the abortion crimeso that no woman is prosecuted or criminalized for terminating her pregnancy after 12 weeks of gestation.
In this regard, she explained that the initiative seeks to eliminate the criminalization of women who exercise this right, mainly those who have a spontaneous abortion, a high-risk pregnancy or women who were victims of rape.

“We must break the falsehood that decriminalizing abortion encourages its practice. What is promoted is the right to decide freely. “Women do not terminate their pregnancies on a whim, but rather because of difficult circumstances that should not be judged, much less criminalized,” he noted.
Through this initiative, the third paragraph of article 76, section VII is sought to be reformed and a section VIII is added to article 130. In addition, Chapter V, Title First, Book Two, all of the Penal Code for the Federal District, is repealed in matters of decriminalization of abortion.
For its part, the PAN parliamentary group rejected the legalization of voluntary abortion after 12 weeks of gestation, pointing out that this initiative threatens human life, does not defend health and puts women’s health at risk.
