The Ministry of Health issued a epidemiological alert for the outbreak of Bloodstream Infection by Klebsiella oxytocarelated too possible contamination of parental Nutrition or inputs related to your submission.
According to the Ssa, al November 29 they were counted on 19 cases in four units (three public and one private clinic) of them,15 cases are confirmed4 are probable cases and one case is ruled out.
In the alert they point out that the November 28,2024the Epidemiological Facts Directoratereported the notification through the Hospital Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RHOVE) about the occurence of cases of bloodstream infections [ITS] in three second-level maternal and child care medical units in the State of Mexico.
With the information available to date, it is known that the age range is 0 to 14 yearsalthough the largest proportion of cases are neonates with management of parenteral fluids with clinical and laboratory data compatible with bloodstream infection (ITS).
“In cases where the identification of the causal agent has been possible, Klebsiella oxytoca was confirmed as the cause of the STI. In one of the medical units it was identified that the cultivation of a solution intravenous parenteral nutrition (NPT) developed K oxytoca.”
It highlights that Klebsiella infections are a major public health problem, mainly in the hospital setting, due to their frequency, severity and resistance to antibiotics, which makes treatment more arduous. Thus,it is indeed essential to implement effective prevention and control measures to reduce the risk of infection and ensure that treatments are effective.
Klebsiella oxytoca is a species of gram-negative,aerobic,non-sporulating,rod-shaped bacteria; which belongs to the genus Kiebsiella. It is commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals, as well as in the environment. It is an opportunistic bacteria that can cause infections in people with weakened immune systems.
In this context, the Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE), requested health personnel from health care units, both public and private throughout the country, to instantly notify the Hospital Epidemiological surveillance Network team upon identifying a probable case. Additionally, the notification must be sent to the email address of the Epidemiological Intelligence Unit and health (UIES) uies@salud.gob.ms, indicating the subject URGENT and with a copy to the email of the corresponding state epidemiologist.
