Malaysia has confirmed to the BRICS countries its intention to join the organization. Bernama reported this with reference to the Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry of the Kingdom Lew Chin TonaDay.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan sent an official letter to the foreign ministers of the nine BRICS countries, confirming Malaysia’s intention to join, the agency noted.

“The presence of a senior Malaysian minister at the BRICS summit in late October represents a valuable opportunity to gain support from BRICS leaders,” Liew said, noting that the desire to join the organization is in line with the country’s position as an independent state.

In his opinion, this will further strengthen the BRICS policy of neutrality and multilateralism.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that BRICS members such as Brazil, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are also pursuing a neutral
foreign policy.

He also disagrees with the suggestion that the country’s bid to join the group could harm its economic relations with Western countries.

The XVI BRICS summit will be held in Kazan on October 22-24.

It was recently reported that another country was invited to the BRICS summit in Kazan.
