Baltimore Ravens Fan Held Without Bail After Assault Charges

BALTIMORE — John Callis, a Baltimore Ravens fan accused of assaulting two 23-year-old men in Federal Hill following a Ravens vs. Washington Commanders football game on October 13, is being held without bail, a judge ruled on Wednesday.

Callis, 24, faces one count of first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault.

According to police, Callis was identified in a viral video wearing a Ravens jersey and allegedly assaulting the two men wearing Commanders jerseys. He surrendered to police on Tuesday.

During the hearing, Callis’ lawyer, Brian Thompson, argued that Callis would not flee due to the high profile of the case. “He’s got one of the most recognizable faces in the country right now,” Thompson stated. He further claimed that Callis was “overcharged,” insisting, “As ugly as the video is – these are punches. No one pulled a gun. No one pulled a knife. These injuries simply do not rise to the level of a first-degree assault.”

Further commenting on the case, Thompson expressed his belief that it should be categorized as second-degree assault, stating, “First-degree assault requires serious bodily injury.” He recommended that Callis needs addiction treatment, acknowledging that Callis was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine during the incident.

Thompson criticized the denial of his client’s request for assessment at the One Promise counseling and addiction education facility, but noted that the judge may consider releasing Callis to another inpatient treatment facility.

“I think he needs help,” Thompson asserted. “The criminal justice system is both designed to punish and rehabilitate. He’s a 24-year-old kid. He clearly has a problem. He needs help.” Judge LaTina Burse Greene remarked that the evidence against Callis is strong, referring to the incident as “clearly an unprovoked assault.”
