Coaching Turnover in the NFL: A Look at the 2021 Hiring Class
Seven new NFL head coaches were hired in 2021, with a staggering five of them now having been fired. The trend underscores the ongoing challenges faced by coaches in professional football, where job security is elusive.
Following the recent dismissal of Robert Saleh from the Jets, only two coaches from the 2021 hiring class remain: Dan Campbell of the Lions and Nick Sirianni of the Eagles.
The first coach to be fired was Urban Meyer of the Jaguars. Despite his success in college football, Meyer struggled to adapt to the professional level, leading his team to a dismal 2-11 start before being let go.
David Culley, who took over the Texans, saw similar fate after just one season, finishing with a record of 4-13. Brandon Staley, coach of the Chargers, was dismissed after concluding his third season with a 24-24 record overall and 0-1 in the playoffs.
Arthur Smith of the Falcons lasted three seasons before his exit, ending with a career record of 21-30. Saleh’s tenure came to an end on Tuesday, just five games into his fourth season, culminating in a record of 20-36.
This leaves Sirianni, who has achieved a 36-19 record in the regular season and a 2-3 playoff record with the Eagles, and Campbell, who stands at 27-27-1 in the regular season along with a 2-1 playoff record with the Lions.
The current coaching situation in the NFL serves as a stark reminder of the lack of job security. The results of the 2021 coaching class highlight that in order to maintain a position for four years or more, securing a playoff victory may be essential.
