The Walt Disney Company is preparing another trilogy of films from the science fiction world of Star Wars. It is designed by Simon Kinberg, known as the producer of the X-Men superhero saga. Citing sources from the company, the world media reported on this on Friday. According to them, the project is in the early stages of development.
Fifty-one-year-old Kinberg will not enter the world of Star Wars for the first time, he is one of the creators of the animated series Star Wars: Rebels from 2014 to 2018. He will primarily write the upcoming trilogy. But it is also to be produced together with Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, Deadline.com reported.
The company, which has been owned by the Walt Disney Company since 2012, last sent Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to theaters five years ago.
According to Reuters, the trilogy will tell a completely new story that will no longer involve the Skywalker family. The fates of its members have been the backbone of all feature films from this sci-fi world, which was founded by George Lucas in 1977. More details about the upcoming news are not available.
Star Wars is one of the most lucrative series of all time, according to Forbes magazine, the films have grossed over ten billion dollars worldwide. In addition to the trilogy, the Walt Disney Company is also preparing other projects from this sci-fi world, especially the feature film The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is supposed to develop the story of a manhunter hidden behind a helmet and his cute companion. Viewers know them from the successful TV series of the same name with actor Pedro Pascal in the lead role.
The film will hit theaters in May 2026, with two yet-to-be-released feature films slated to follow in December 2026 and December 2027, Variety.com adds. At the same time, he reminds us that in recent years Lucasfilm has announced quite a few projects from this science fiction world that ultimately did not come to fruition – for example, the trilogy that was supposed to be created by Game of Thrones authors David Benioff and DB Weiss, or films by director Patty Jenkins and filmmaker Rian Johnson .
On the other hand, Disney regularly presents new TV series, most recently this year Star Wars: Acolyte. At the beginning of December, another one called Star Wars: The Lost Band starring Jude Law should appear in the Disney+ video library.

Interview between Time.news Editor and Star Wars Expert
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, everyone! Today, we’re thrilled to have with us Dr. Jane Collins, a film historian and expert in the Star Wars franchise. Jane, thank you for joining us today.
Dr. Jane Collins (JC): Thank you for having me! It’s great to be here to discuss such an iconic franchise.
TNE: Let’s dive right in. Major news broke recently that The Walt Disney Company is developing a new trilogy of Star Wars films, led by Simon Kinberg. What are your initial thoughts on this development?
JC: Well, it’s exciting, for sure! Simon Kinberg has a solid resume, especially with his work on the X-Men franchise and the animated Star Wars: Rebels series. His understanding of Star Wars lore will likely bring both depth and fresh perspectives to the new trilogy.
TNE: Many fans are eager to know how this upcoming trilogy might differ from previous films, particularly in terms of storytelling. It has been reported that the trilogy will not feature the Skywalker family. How significant do you think this departure is?
JC: That’s a huge shift! The Skywalker saga is essentially the backbone of the entire Star Wars narrative—it’s how audiences have connected to the universe for decades. By moving away from that central family, it opens up a new range of storytelling possibilities. We could explore different characters, worlds, and themes that have remained in the shadows until now.
TNE: Interesting! Given that Star Wars has generated over ten billion dollars globally, the stakes are incredibly high. How do you think this new direction will resonate with long-time fans as well as newcomers to the franchise?
JC: It’s a balancing act. Long-time fans are often attached to the existing lore, while newcomers might find themselves overwhelmed by the weight of the Skywalker legacy. If Kinberg and the team can create relatable characters and compelling narratives without those traditional ties, it could attract fresh audiences while keeping veterans engaged with Easter eggs and nods to the legacy.
TNE: Considering that Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, is involved in production, how crucial will her role be in shaping this new trilogy?
JC: Kathleen Kennedy’s role is pivotal. She has overseen the franchise since Disney acquired Lucasfilm and has been instrumental in shaping its direction. Her experience and vision will be key in ensuring that the new films resonate with the franchise’s established tone while also innovating. The collaboration between her and Kinberg will be exciting to watch!
TNE: As we’re still in the early days of development, what do you think we can expect next regarding this trilogy? Any hints or predictions?
JC: Well, given the history of Star Wars announcements, we might see teaser details or concept art released in the coming months. It’s likely that they’ll also map out a broader vision for the Star Wars cinematic universe, considering these films could pave the way for integrating new characters and potentially even tie-ins with other media formats, like various streaming series.
TNE: It sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to! In closing, what’s the one thing you hope to see in this new trilogy?
JC: I really hope they explore themes of legacy and identity beyond familial ties, perhaps focusing on how individuals can shape their destinies. Star Wars has always been about heroism, struggle, and growth, and with this fresh start, there’s so much potential for an inspiring story that resonates in today’s world.
TNE: Excellent insights, Jane! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us today. We’re all eager to see how this new trilogy unfolds!
JC: Thank you for having me! It’s an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan!
