This regional election was attended by 1,556 pairs of regional head candidates at various levels of government.
The regional election participants consist of: 103 pairs of candidates for governor-deputy governor in 37 provinces. 1,168 pairs of candidates for regent and deputy regent in 415 districts, 284 pairs of candidates for mayor and deputy mayor in 93 cities.
This Simultaneous Pilkada is a mandate of Law Number 10 of 2016, which is an amendment to previous regulations regarding the election of governors, regents and mayors.
“This is based on the mandate of Law Number 10 of 2016,concerning the second amendment to Law Number 1 of 2015,” explained Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya in a working meeting and hearing with Commission II DPR RI.
The 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada aims to synchronize programs between the central and regional governments, while strengthening the presidential system regulated in the 1945 Constitution after the amendments.
“The aim of holding Simultaneous Pilkada is to strengthen synchronization of central and regional government programs, save budget, reduce wastage of time, increase voter participation, minimize social conflict, and align national and regional development programs,” said Bima Arya.
The Ministry of Home Affairs also recorded that the number of potential voters in the List of Potential Election Voters (DP4) was 203,657,354 people, consisting of 102,011,361 men and 101,645,993 women.
