Top 14: Bordeaux’s Nicolas Depoortere evacuated on stretcher after horrific head-to-head clash

by time news

Concern for Nicolas Depoortere. The French international and Union Bordeaux-Bègles center had to be evacuated by medical teams at the Chaban Delmas stadium this Saturday during the Top 14 match between UBB and Perpignan. A neck brace was put on him and he had to be carried out on a stretcher, cheered on by all the fans at the venue.

Conscious when he left the field, he suffered a serious concussion. In a press conference after the match, UBB coach Yannick Bru also mentioned “the suspicion of a facial fracture“.

Ball in hand, Nicolas Depoortere was hit violently by Apisai Naqalevu while the Bordeaux were clearly ahead (31-0) at the start of the second half (45th). The Fijian player, 35 years old (1.84 m, 111 kg) obviously wanted to tackle him but he literally overwhelmed the Bordeaux player in an impressive head-to-head.

After watching the video, Apisai Naqalevu was logically sanctioned with a red card by the match referee. Perpignan ended the match at 14 against 15. Nicolas Depoortere was replaced by Mateo Garcia.

The Under-20 world champion with the French team, Nicolas Depoortere, 21, had two selections with the A team last season. The Blues will face Japan on November 9, New Zealand on November 16 and Argentina on November 22 as part of their autumn tour. The Bordeaux player should have been included in the list of 42 players drawn up by coach Fabien Galthié.
