Turnovers in the retail trade of food, beverages and tobacco products in Bulgaria marked a double-digit growth in August on an annual basis, and on a monthly basis maintained their level from July, according to data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

In August 2024, in the section “Retail trade, excluding the trade in cars and motorcycles”, a decrease in turnover was observed by 0.6 percent compared to the previous month at comparable prices, preliminary and seasonally adjusted data of the NSI, released today, show. Trade turnover increased by 4.9 percent compared to August 2023, calendar-adjusted data show.

A reference in the NSI indicates that in August 2023 the turnover was at the level of the previous month and without change compared to August 2022.

Monthly changes

For August, a decrease in turnover was reported in “Retail trade in non-food goods, excluding trade in motor fuels and lubricants” – by 1.1 percent, and “Retail trade in motor fuels and lubricants” – by 0.6 per hundred. “Retail trade of food, beverages and tobacco products” maintains the level of the previous month.

In the group “Retail trade in non-food goods, excluding the trade in motor fuels and lubricants”, a decrease was observed in subgroups: “Retail trade by mail order, telephone or Internet” – by 3.2 percent, “Retail trade with various goods” – by 2.6 percent, and “Retail trade with computer and communication equipment” – by 2.1 percent. An increase was registered in “Retail trade with textiles, clothing, shoes and leather goods” – by 2.3 percent.

Annual changes

In August 2024, compared to the same month of 2023, an increase in turnover was registered in “Retail trade in food, beverages and tobacco products” – by 10.2 percent, and in “Retail trade in non-food goods , excluding trade in motor fuels and lubricants” – by 4.7 percent. A decrease was recorded in “Retail trade with automotive fuels and lubricants” – by 6.4 percent.

In the group “Retail trade in non-food goods, excluding trade in motor fuels and lubricants”, a significant growth was observed in the subgroup “Retail trade in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods” – by 19.6 percent. A decrease was recorded in “Retail trade by mail, telephone or Internet orders” – by 1.3 percent, BTA informs.
